National Museum (Dublin)

National Museum of Ireland was built in the 1880's to the design of Sir Thomas Deane. Its splendid domed rotunda features marble pillars and a zodiac mmaic floor. The ground floor holds Or - Ireland's Gold, a collection of Bronze Age finds, including many beautiful pieces of jewelry. Objects from the later Iron Age Celtic period are on display in the Treasury. There are also many well known treasures from the era of Irish Christianity.

The Road to Independence exhibition covers events between 1900 and 1921. The objects associated with the 1916 Easter Rising include the Republican flag that flew briefly over Dublin's General Post Office in O'Connell Street.

The first floor houses Viking artifacts and the Ancient Egypt gallery. The Viking exhibition features coins, potteryd Quay near Christ Church Cathedral (see p119).

National Museum has another branch at Benburb Street, west of the city center. Housed in the vast Collins Barracks, established in 1700 by William III, this annex is a more modern museum, and is gradually being extended to fill all four barrack blocks. The principal exhibits are the museum's collections of furniture, silver, and scientific instruments.
