Nederlands Scheepvaart Museum (Amsterdam)

Once the arsenal of the Dutch Navy, this vast Classical sandstone edifice was built in 1656, It is supported by 18,000 piles driven into the bed of the Oosterdok. The Navy stayed in residence here until 1973, when the building was converted into the National Maritime Museum, holding the largest collection of boats in the world. Displays of real ships, models, and maps give a chronological survey of the country's seafaring tradition. One of the Scheepvaart museum's finest original exhibits is a 17m (54ft) long gilded barge, made in 1818 for King William I. The vessel was last used in 1962 for Queen Juliana's 25th wedding anniversary celebrations.

Another major attraction is a full size model of a Dutch East Indiaman, the Amsterdam. During the 16th century the Dutch East India Company used such vessels to sail as far as China, Japan, and Indonesia in the development of the spice trade. Moored in a dock behind the museum building, the Amsterdam is today "crewed" by actors, who renact life aboard one of these vast wooden ships.
