The meridian line that divides the earth's eastern and
western hemispheres passes through the Royal Observatory Greenwich and millions of visitors have been photographed standing with one foot
on either side of it. Designed by Christopher Wren, the building is
topped by a ball on a rod, dropped at 1 pm every day since 1833 so that
ships' chronometers could be set by it.
