Scottish National Portrait Gallery (Edinburgh)

Royal house of Stuart is just one of the attractions at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. The displays detail the history of 12 generations of Stuarts, from the time of RobeIt the Bruce to Queen Anne.

Memorabilia include Mary, Queen of Scots' jewelry and a silver traveling canteen left by Bonnie Prince Charlie at the Battle of Culloden. The upper gallery has portraits of famous Scots, including one of the country's best-loved poet Robert Burns (1759-96) by Alexander Nasmyth.

Others portrayed include Flora MacDonald, who helped Bonnie Prince Charlie escape after his defeat by the English in 1745, philosopher David Hume (1711-76), novelist Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), and Ramsay MacDonald, who became Britain's first Labour prime minister in 1924.
