Diving with the Great White Shark (AUSTRALIA)

Have you ever had that dream in which you are swimming in the ocean peacefully suddenly realizing that you have drifted too far from the land…… at that moment a feeling of uneasiness covers all your body and when you look around the bright sunny weather has left to a gloomy stormy atmosphere and then right under you, right beneath your feet in the depths of the ocean a black shadow swirls…….. you know you are not alone, that an unknown being of the sea is making you company.

Thanks to Spielberg, most of us wake up breathlessly from this nightmare knowing that the unknown sea creature beneath your feet could be the Great White Shark. Would you be courageous enough to overcome your Jaws-phobia in the Southern seas of Australia by cage-diving with the great white shark?.... Lets give it a try!

Information of the Great White Shark

The Great White Shark is an apex predator meaning that it is at the top of the food chain with no natural predators. The Great White is the only Apex predator today that has not been kept or tamed by man and it should remain that way! This means that they have their pick of the buffet table when it comes to selecting their prey. It seems that they are not picky, choosing fish, squids, other sharks, dolphins, and whales. Their favorite prey, however, are pinnipeds, a fancy name for seals & sea lions. They feed on carcasses as well, especially large whales.

In South Africa Rodney Fox, organises cage-diving trips to offer you a face to face encounter with great white sharks in the Southern Ocean.

Our shark diving would take place in the neabys of the channel Shark Alley and were told that we could either wait for minutes for our predators to come or it could even last days, However, minutes was valid in our case because we were there at the peak season April (peak season: From April to October). First, quantities of specially prepared bait were prepared to attract the Great White sharks but before that a berley consisting of minced tuna mixed with water was dripped over the side of the boat to lure the sharks while sailing so that sharks could keep track of our boat. Next, great pieces of tuna bates attached to the sides of the boat functioned as the real bait for our predators to come closer.

We caught sight of our first sharks, estimated to be four or five meters. When we first saw them, a feeling of excitement and terror struck us but we were determined to fight our phobia. After having being briefed on the procedures of cage diving, joined two other divers in the cage which was very slowly lowered into the water.

The slow descent was an eerie feeling and when we finally reached the bottom which was about 18m, we waited for a few minutes until we saw our first white shark.

First it lurked around some 3 meteres away, it circled us for a while coming closer each time, or it seemed to us it did because everytime it swirled around us it was as if it were scrutinizing us. It was ironical because like in a sea-zoo, we were the ones in the cage, in the dominion of fish, and the great white shark was contemplating us.

The reasons why it was scrutinizing us, we dont know, a different species to see or a good meal for the afternoon…..
