Tree of wishes (HONG KONG)All those years you wrote to Santa and when you grew up you learned the terrible truth: It wasn’t him but mom and dad bringing all those presents. In Hong Kong, grannies take their grandchildren to the Wishing tree to make their wishes. Wishes are written onto a specially designed red slip of paper tied onto an orange with string. There a several stalls selling these clustered around the tree. Then, the whole thing is tossed into the air with the aim of hooking it over a branch, thereby granting the wish. And if the paper catches the top of the tree, congratulations--that means the wish will come true very soon! There are actually two Wishing Trees, but the one near the road, also called the Spirit Tree, is much more famous. In the old days, people say that the bigger Wishing Tree is for wishes about academic results, health and things which are related to our life, while the one beside the Temple is for wishes concerning marriage and children. But through the many years, such a rule is forgotten, and most people simply worship the bigger tree because it is easier to hang it on. The Wishing Tree, located near the Tin Hou Temple in Lam Tsuen, is one of Hong Kong's most famous tourist attractions. It is usually crowded during the Chinese New Year holidays and seems to be covered in deep crimson colors whenever seen from a distance. Hong Kong Tours | |||
