All of Jaipur is painted into pink, all buildings, fairytale palaces, fortresses everything is in pink. We learnt that the city was built of pink stucco in imitation of sandstone, and is remarkable among pre-modern Indian cities for the width and regularity of its streets.
To our surprise, this old city is actually one of the best planned cities we had ever seen with broad aventues all placed out in a very organized way.
Not only was Jaipur an architectural fascination, but it had colourful bazzars selling trinkets and handlooms and unforgettable gardens as an adornment to the pictoresque pink monuments.
Very particular to Jaipur is the traditional puppet making and puppetry. On every street you may come accross a puppet performance that enact the court battles and historical bouts such as stories of enemies and lovers. These performances are an ancient and popular form of folk entertainment. No village fair, no religious festival and no social gathering in Rajasthan can be complete without the kathputlis (string puppets).
These puppets are controlled by one string that passes
from the top of the puppet's head, over the manipulator's hand, and
down to one shoulder and controls the body. The shrill voices characteristic
of the Rajasthani marionettes are produced by the head puppeteer,
who speaks through a bamboo reed.
In other words, travelling in India without visiting Jaipur is like
having seen just half of India..
