Hemis Festival in Ladakh (INDIA)

Ladakh is a land bounded by two of the largest mountain ranges the Himalayas and the Karakoram, however Ladakh is one of the least populated districts in India. Famous for its remote mountain beauty and Tibetan Budhist culture, Ladakh is also known as Little Tibet.

What is remarkable of Ladakh besides its natural mountaneous beauty is that Ladakhis people smile a lot and seem very content with life, there is this sense of peace and fullfilledness that you feel while amongst them that compares to nothing in the western world. People in Ladakh give you the impression that they never experience anger, jealousy, or depresssion.

Another very important fact about Ladakh is that the intermingled life style with nature and the population being so low (2 persons for a km) has created a 0% crime-rate city. The prison Leh (capital of Ladakh) is a 3 room barrack, with almost all 3 of them empty.

This temple rich state in India hosts one of the most colorful festival in the world. Hemis Gompa one of the most famous and wealthiest Budhist temples, celebrates the birthday of Guru Padmasambhava with a two-day Budhist festival. This event honours both the birthday of Guru Padmasambhava (who was responsible for bringing Buddhism to Nepal) and the ancient victory of Lamaism over Shamanism and other religions.

The Hemis festival is sort of a theatrical performance starting with a parade of pre lamaism priests in colourful rich robes of china silk and brocade. In this theatrical performance including music and pantomime, various stories are told - the essence being, the fight of evil with good and the arrival of Buddhism to Ladakh.

Sunset and sunrise are the best times to see all the colour against the stunning backdrop of mountains. If wearing strange clothes isn't enough, these pantomimers then perform an endless dance to a cacophony of brass trumpets, cymbals and drums.
