Meet the Dalai Lama in person (INDIA)

10th of March is the National Uprising day for the Tibetans living in exile. In this particular period, His Holiness the Dalai Lama gives teachings for around 10 days in the Budist temple in Dharamsala located in Northern India, on the banks of the Himalaya’s.where he has been living in exile for 46 years.

During this period, The little town of Dharamasala is invaded! by foreigners all around the World who come t listen to H. H. The Dalai Lama.

The Dalai Lama is a smiling and very sympathetic man, who gives teachings in the most understandable and simple way , away from complexion. The teachings are in Tibetan but the language problem is solved as we will explain to you later on.

When His Holiness the Dalai Lama gives public teachings in India you would be well advised to bring: a cushion, an FM radio, a cup, and a sunhat and given the security checks that take place, as little else as possible.

The convention amongst Tibetans is that you take your seat on the first day of a series of teachings, mark it with a cushion or a piece of cloth, and thereafter keep to that seat for the duration of the teachings. This is how Tibetans have traditionally avoided hassling each other over who sits where every day.

On most occasions when HH the Dalai Lama is teaching publicly in India an effort is made to provide a simultaneous translation into English. This is made available by radio. If you wish to listen to the translation, you are advised to bring an FM radio with headphones so as not to disturb the majority of listeners who are listening in Tibetan. Although the quality of the signal varies according to the circumstances, you can often improve reception by changing the angle and position of the antenna of your radio, which is often incorporated in the headphone lead.

It is customary for tea to be served to the gathering, so it is worthwhile carrying your own cup. You will often notice that money is offered to monks and nuns. This is an offering to the spiritual community. Both the tea and offerings are paid for by contributions from patrons and the general public. If you would also like to contribute there is nearly always an office near the teaching location where you can do so. How much you give is entirely at your discretion, but you will be given a receipt.

But if you want to meet the Dalai Lama in person, face to face, ask questions, and shake hands, then you can apply to the his Office in Dharamasala for an audience months before the teachings. 15 people get to attend to these auditions.

Many Hollywood celebrities such as Richard Gere also come to Dharamsala to attend his teachings. He wears on casual clothes and therefore it will be hard for you to recognize him.

The moment you start talking to him, the sexy good looking actor turns into a compassionate, loving, elder brother who you feel will be there for you when you need a shoulder to cry on. The mature conversation is fullfilling and informative. You will notice his passion for the Tibetans. He is right to feel that way as

Tibetans are warm people , greeting you and smiling to you every time even if you do not know them. They are willing to share their tea, their food and friendship and do not know the word ‘anger’ and you wish there were more of these people among the angry crowd in New York!
