Korowai tribe adventure tour (INDONESIA)Some tribes in Indonesia live in tree houses. Want to climb one and feel the sensation?. Beware . They are very high! The very first thing that caught our eye from a distance was a tree house, so very very on top of a tree that looked so weak and thin as if it would collapse with a slight wind blow. Climbing up the stairs of a Tree house was tough, taking into consideration that these tree houses can reach heights up to 50 meters, what however only in exceptional cases the case is. The Korowai build such kind of tree houses only if there is a dispute with the neighbours, or if they live in an hostile area. Their normal tree houses are around 6 to 25 Meters high. A Korowai family with up to eight persons live in such kind of houses. But there is a strictly separatism between men and women. The roof and walls of the house are made from sago palm fronds. The indoor cooking fires are build on mud-covered lattices which hang over holes in the floor, so that they can be cut away and drop out of the tree, if a fire ever gets dangerous. Several families, as well as as their dogs and domestic pigs would share such a house. The most striking quality of these tree houses is the scenery of the beautiful landscape, one can spend a whole day watching the wild landscape without doing anything. Becase everything in the Korowai lifestyle depends on the tree, they make their bags and daily used tools from tree logs. Furtermore, to our relief, their favorite meal is the larvae from the Capricorn beetle found inside the trunk of the trees. You may ask why is it that we are relieved that the Korowai have such a food choice; well…. Because in the early times they were famous for their former headhunting which was an aspect of their warrior culture and they believed that when they killed and ate a person they would become that person and absorb their skills.
