Visit the cave in which Jesus was born (ISRAEL)As we all know Israel is the crossroad and the spiritual heart of three great religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Many of us, either from the Bible or even from Christmas carols, have read or heard that Jesus Christ was born in a cave. Others claim to know as a fact that he was born in a manger near a stable. However, according to the books of Mathew and Luke, Jesus was born in a cave in Bethlehem and then he was moved to a manger next to a stable. The 1500 year old “Church of the Nativity” in Bethlehem 8 km south of Jerusalem, is considered one of the oldest churches in the Christian world and the most important one, for under the church there is a cave where Jesus was believed to be born. Over this cave the Emperor Constantine built a church in the name of his mother Queen Helena and since then it has been on service. During the Crusades it was a much visisted place of pilgrimage and still continues to be. When we first entered the church, we could not help a feeling of divine peace and fulfillment created by the church’s atmosphere and the Christian pilgrims. The church consists of two important lobes, one with a star to the mark the place of Jesus’ birth and the other to mark the place of the manger and where the holy family rested. Israel Tours | |||
