Sure you have heard the expression “Beauty is a relative concept, and changes according to its beholder”….. True! Beauty is absolutely very subjective for the people of the Surma tribe in Ethiopia.
The Surma live in the Omo Valley region in the south of Ethiopia and stil maintain their culture and life style much as they have for centuries. Actually, this is one of the only few places where people wear tribal garments in real life not as a touristical attraction. The women stil wear animal skins for clothing ad the men own a single wrap.
When we visited the Surma tribe, the first thing we noticed is that Surmans, or lets say Ethiopian native people as a whole, is that they are not very enthusiastic about foreigners. Anyway after a while they become used to you and socialize keeping their distance, However we were determined to pick a few beauty tips both from women and men.
We noticed that both males and females of the Surma tribe shave their heads as a mark of beauty. Until now …. Shaving our head could be an acceptable price for beauty. Then came the biggest Surman beauty tip of all: women wear clay lip plates in a way that their lower lips are pierced and stretched as everlarger plates are inserted over time! Moreover, the larger the adorned plate, the more appealing the woman is.
And to a young girl fit for marriage, the larger her plate, the larger the number of cattle is required for her dowry. Do not forget that a plate is worth 75 of 80 head of cattle.
We decided that even for 7500 head of cattle and a 75 karat diamond and on top, we still would not “plate” our lips!
