Old City of Petra (JORDAN)
Petra ( meaning “stone” in Greek) lies about 3-5 hours south of Amman in between the mountains south of the Dead Sea, and is one of the most famous attractions of Jordan. The Nabatean city of Petra is one of the most spectacular ancient cities remaining in the modern world and a must to see for visitors.
The city was the capital of the Nabateans -Arabs who dominated the lands of Jordan during pre-Roman times- and they carved this wonderland of temples, tombs and elaborate buildings out of solid rock.The colour of the rock ranges from pale yellow or white through rich reds to the darker brown of more resistant rocks.
In order to best taste the atmosphere of this ancient wonder, visit in the quiet of the early morning or late afternoon when the sandstone rock glows red with quiet grandeur.
However, a personal tip on our part, don’t ever ever never try to walk by yourself to the city of Petra because it will be one of the longest walks of your life and once you arrive you will not have any energy remained to appreciate Petra’ s grandeur.
