Bow blowing lessons (MALAYSIA)

The Dayak tribe in Sarawak, Malaysia is one of the most colourful yet notorious tribes in Malaysia due to their former head hunting lifestyle. However, known to be great warriors of their time, we decided we would take blowpipe lessons from it experts; The Dayaks, who have been hunting (only wild bearded pigs of Asia now) with their blow pipes.

When we arrived in their villages with their long houses built in poles, we were impressed by men covered with tatoos all through their bodies. These tatoos play an important part of their cultural lives in that, they reflect their lifetime stories, their travels, their hunting adventures and their warrior accomplishments. We were told that these tatoos were in fact a replacement for human sacrifice which was practiced long time ago.

Now, in our quest of their tatoo history, we noticed that very old Dayaks had numerous ring-like tatoos in their hands. We then learnt, that at the time when the Dayaks were head hunters, each ring represented a head. And most important of all, the larger the number of rings, the larger the prestige and the popularity amongst women……

Anyway, relieved that the Dayaks no longer practiced their former hunting habits, we decided to learn how to blow pipe. For generation the Dayaks used poison-tipped bamboo darts for hunting. These blowpipes consist of hollow bamboo pipes used to Project poisoned dart aimed at the target.

After a brief lesson we tried the blowpipe…. You cannot imagine how accurate it hits the target even in your first trial. We even hit target from 50 feet. While for the Dayaks the blowpipe as a means of hunting, for us it was the best dart-like (but more exciting) game. We could play it for hours.

Later on the Dayaks welcomed us by cooking the famous bearded wild pig they had hunted with their longer blow pipes. One thing you must know about Dayak food….IT IS THE MOST DELICIOUS ONE YOU WILL EVER HAVE IN YOUR LIFE!....

They place the rice and meat in leaves and roll the leaves around them (like sushi) after wards they place them inside hollow bamboos (acting as cooking pots) and cook them on fire. Oh my God the mixture of bamboo taste with the wild pig is the best that you can have… and you never have enough
