Drink Kimiz (MONGOLIA)Have you ever drinken Kimiz, health drink made
from horse milk? More than the reindeer, the Mongolian life-style as a whole, depends on the horse, a whole tradition of thousand years depend on horses, starting from their milk Kimiz, to their usage in daily routine as means of transport and as a celebration of sport activitities. The horse that the nomad Mongolian rides is a domesticated cousin of the Takhi or Prezewalski horse, a small but strong horse with enormous endurance. These surefooted horses are especially good in the rough forest areas of Mongolia. Once a year the most prominent event of the Mongolian culture is celebrated. The Horse Races of Nadaam. The Nadaam festival, or eriyn gurvan nadaam, is the biggest festival of the year for Mongolians. Usually occuring in July, it runs for three days in all parts of the country and highlights the greatest athletes in horse racing, archery, and wrestling: Mongolia's most popular sports. The largest of these festivals occur in Ulaanbaatar itself. Herdsmen arrive on horseback from distant provinces, simultaneously training their horses. Such a journey lasts for anytime between one to three months! A giant nomadic camp is being set up on the Jarmag Steppe area, between the city and the Bogd Khan Mountain Biosphere and the tournament begins. After the sports festival in which “the horse” performs its most upmost characteristical talents, we decided to experience another quality derived from the horse. Kimiz, a traditional health drink made by horse milk, left out in the sun for a week or two in sheep or goat gut bag. As customary, you are expected to taste Kimiz, for it is a display of hospitality from the part of the Mongolian and may be considered rude if you refuse to drink. Besides having to drink from the same bowl with 10 other people, Kimiz is a sour untasty drink, but after a while the taste grows on to a cheese-like slightly alcoholic sensation.
