Every year, breaking a long retreat, the Wodaabe, a nomadic herders' tribe of unknown origin, gather in the sahelian plain of Niger, while the Tuareg leave for a few days their long sandy isolation to congregate and bid welcome to this queen. It is then summer, and the yearlong scorched and desolate prairies become suddenly alive with bustling nomadic camps and caravans. The Wodabee compete for the 'Gerewol', a beauty contest in which the men adorn themselves in elaborate costumes and colourful make up, and the Tuareg vie in races and dances.
Prepearations of the males takes hours and in the end they appear, made up, adorned with jewels and their most beautiful attires. They sing and dance slowly so, then offer to women their wrinkled smiles and the eyes opened wide to advance the aesthetics of the face. The girl Bororo get involved then to the dancers and choose the most beautiful.
Why do men adorn like women? The message is clear ‘We understand how it feels to be a woman, we understand what it is to be a woman so pick me.
