Fish piranhas in the Amazon (PERU)

How about having fish tonight?... but not any other fish, how about having piranhas to eat tonight instead of them having you to eat?...

In the Amazon basin in Peru, one of the most popular and traditional activities, or lets say hobbies, is to fish piranhas. Fishermen say that piranhas were not of a danger in summer time while the tide was high, however when the tide is low in wintertime, they told us that walking around barefooted, you could get bitten.

Anyway we for our first piranha fishing experience, we used a stick, a fishing line and a hook with meat (real meat or chicken, not any other bait) for bait. What was funny here is that when you think of how small the piranha (around 8 inches long ) and how little meat it has, is it worth it to use quite a lot of meat to catch that small a fish?... . You immediately feel the pack bite your bait and you must pull immediately. When we caught them we noticed that they really had sharp teeth.

However, we were surprised to learn by the natives here that the only time piranhas in these area, bite is when you actually catch the piranha and it flops on the bottom of the boat where it bites the bare feet of fishermen. Some even told us that you can swim int he water with them and they dont harm you.....but that was something we did not dare to prove.

So...How did the piranha taste?...DELICIOUS. especially with lemon, one drawback is that you must fish hundreds of them because they have so little meat
