Meet Dr Rat

Not only was “cuy" a great meal, but it was also used for many healing purposes as well. It was not uncommon to see guinea pigs running around the kitchen at breakfast, and on your plate at lunch. The common guinea pig is a way for the healer to determine the problem of the patient, and also helps in prescribing the cure. The guinea pig is used as an x-ray of the patient. It is rubbed over the body, and where it ‘makes sounds’ in other words queakes there is where the problem is. In more serious cases the guinea pig dies where the problem is and then is cut open to be examined more closely. Thanks God our unimportant headache saved this cuy’s life.

Overall, our experiences with traditional healing in Peru are fascinating and informative. In coming to Caraz we have romanticized our views of traditional healers and their cures, but found them to be more of a community service. In regards to women healers, their services are a fact of life, but for men they are held more prestige. Our experiences in Peru has taught to question our faith and dependence in Western medicine.
