Caress a white lion (SOUTH AFRICA)When we first saw the White Lion, (in the only place that we could see them on earth) in Timbavati, a wildlife region bordering on South Africa’s Kruger National Park, we thought we were looking at a magical creature from out of earth, something more like a unicorn was what came to our mind. While caressing their beautiful cubs, we actually learned that legends had proclaimed the White lions magical powers. The name Timbavati, where the white lion originated, meant “ the place where something sacred came down to earth” and be sure they do look sacred and benevolent. However, later on we learnt that White Lions were very endangered species and that they were line bred to their own relatives to perpetuate their species and their unique white color coat. The reason why they are white is that there is a recessive gene in white lions that gives them this colour, yet with the beauty of their color comes a big disadvantage. Their white color can give away their hiding place when it comes to hunting and white cubs could be easy preys to predators such as hyenas . Therefore because of these genetic disadvantages and unscrupulous hunting practices, the White Lion is endangered and cannot be seen in the wild. Yet, seeing one and touching it, gave us a sense that we had been blessed by these mythical beasts. These unique snow white lions with magnificent manes and laser eyes did have a magical touch to them... South Africa ToursJump from the highest waterfall in Zululand | |||
