Jumping from the waterfall (SOUTH AFRICA)When it was time for a Zulu boy to become a Zulu man and warrior, he had to pass through a series of tests, one of the most important ordeals for a Zulu boy to proove himself a man was to jump down from the highest point of a waterfall……….. We decided to conform to the Zulu tradition and become a fully equipped Zulu man……… we jumped from the highest waterfall in Eshowe, Durbin at the east of South Africa………. We became a man (in our case we became a Zulu-Xena combination of a warrior) There is a rocky geographical structure to Eshowe more than mountains and because the area is very watery and moist due to the various waterfalls , these mountaneous rocks have become corroded and slippery enough to create natural slides. Led by George, our tour guide and a lover of waterfall-jumping, we arrived to one of the highest waterfall points ready to pass our Zulu test. We were told that it was a must that we had our trousers and shoes on while sliding and jumping through the waterfalls of Eshowe. We slid down the waterfall……..WHAT AN ADRENALIN WAVE!.......we slid again and again and later on we decided to pass our great ordeal, To jump down directly to the waters, without sliding down. For us, this would make us a man (in our case a very brave woman), in the case of other very young visitors this would be one of those “Adrenalize me a last time before I start my boring job at the bank ” experiences. George told us to hold our arms straight beside us, our legs straight and jump on our foot without bending at all. We jumped……….we passed the test! We became a “man”! Most of us became “real men” but one of started to complain about some rib aches, we later on learnt that he had broken two ribs………. Quite an ordeal.
