City of Suakin (SUDAN)

On the Red Sea coast of Sudan, just at the south of the modern harbor Port Sudan is the remains of the city of Suakin. At first sight we thought that this city seemed to be built under the sea rather than above it because of its buildings constructed of coral blocks.

In Suakin you will see the remains of a late Medieval city which was once the most important emporium in the west coast of the Red Sea. Once the wealth of the city came from trading slaves. Slaves were transported out to Suakin, and then put on ships bringing them up to the Ottoman empire. This was a lucrative trade going on for some centuries, and the money in circulation made the beauty of Suakin possible. This beauty was recognized even in its time, and attempts to restore the buildings were commenced in 1881 by the Sudanese themselves.

The beauty of this antique picturesque city is due to the buildings of the city, built of coral blocks held together with minimum amount of mortar and wooden beams.

It was very sad to hear that all the main buildings in Suakin, that needed constant maintenance collapsed in 2003 and that Suakin is not getting the maintenant it needs for restoration.
