Vodoo Ritual in Togo (TOGO)

Have you ever day dreamed of owning a Voodoo doll in the shape of your despot boss? Sticking needles on it every time he loses it?...

Voodoo (Vodun) is an ancient religion practiced by some 30 million people in the West African nations of Benin, Togo and Ghana. With its countless deities, animal sacrifice and spirit possession, voodoo has been misunderstood by the western civilization to be satanic and even an inspiration to many a Hollywood productions.

As much as Voodoo may be considered a religion with characteristic rituals, there is a dark side to voodoo. Sorcerers called botono can be summoned to put a hex on an adversary, using the malevolent power of a voodoo spirit.

In the land of Voodoo, Togo, we decided to make a visit to a Voodoo sorcerer and to participite in one of the very common Voodoo rituals….. we were in a good mood and our despotic boss is stil leading a marvellous life in his 3 storied mansion.

Before visting our botono, we first had a look at the open-air market of Lome, Togo’s capital where merchants sell basics of Voodoo such as talismans, statues of voodoo gods, dried animal heads or organs such as gorilla hands either sold for mediciine or their spiritual power.

Later on we visited our Voodoo sorcerer. Just in case, we showed great deference to the botono presenting him with our cultural talisman (the evil eye necklace that protects you from every glance that has evil intentions).

Very content with his present, the botono started his voodoo ritual and not to our surprise at all, we encountered the botono grabbing a live chicken and cutting it up to obtain its blood. What is substantial in Voodoo rituals, is the use of fresh and warm blood in voodoo spells or rituals.

The botono performed what we would call white magic, in which he provided us with good fortune and prosperity.
