Ice Fishing in Lake Childir (TURKEY)Cildir Lake is at the North East of Turkey in the city of Ardahan. It is famous for its ice fishing season due to the fact that the lake is frozen for almost 6 months of the year. When we decided to ice fish, we were told to take with us a pickax and shovel, fort hat was the way how fishermen in Ardahan broke the thickest ice we had ever seen (approximately 1 meter thick) to puncture a hole for fishing. We were surprised to see the fishermen bring with them fish nets, because we had thought that ice fishing involved a little hole and a fishing rod through which 1 or 2 fish would be enough for the day. We were absolutely wrong, the hole punctured in the ice was quite a big one (thats why pickaxes and shovels were needed) and fishermen threw their nets inside. However, this was not an easy task for fishermen, so we were told that they had found a more practical and easier way to obtain more fish. Fishermen earning their life through this, told us that due to Cildir Lake being frozen for 5- 6 months they placed their fish nets before the lake froze and after 3-4 weeks they would collect them by breaking the ice. Of course, they would leave signs to where the nets were placed to find them. They told us that this both saved time and enabled them to obtain larger amounts of fish. After collecting their fish, they left their fish nets at the same place for the next collect. Legend of the Cildir LakeSomething we didnt know about Cildir Lake was the legend on it. According to the legend, Cildir Lake was once actually a dry plain and that there was a village in this plain. In this village a brother and a sister lived, loved by the villagers and by their family. They were so much devoted to each other brother and sister that when they grew up and the brother went to be a soldier, the sister felt deep grief very much shared by the villagers too. Now, the village had a water fountain that was carefully turned off after being used because the village on a concave plain and villagers were scared of having a flood. So one day after several years of grief, the brother returned home and everyone rejoiced his arrival. The sister was so overwhelmed by the good news that she forgot to turn off the fountain waters where she was drinking water. That night, because of the celebrations nobody remembered to turn it off. The day after, neighbour villagers realized that the whole village had been flooded with water and dissappeared in the waters of the fountain. Turkey Tours | |||
