Dive with Manattees in Crystal Water (FLORIDA)
For us one of the sweetest, lovable animals we have ever seen were the Manattees, otherwise called the Sea Cows.
The manattees, large marine mammals streamlined in shape with adults averaging to 1000-1500 pounds in weight and up to 12 ft in length, make Crystal Water, near the west coast of Florida, their winter home because they are used to warm waters. These gentle creatures contrary to their appearance are so fragile, that in cold waters they may catch a respiratory illness, which is one of the main causes of death for them.
The manattees, have sharp vision, sharp hearing and modest flippers that surprisingly helps them glide in water very easily. The whole time we swam with them, they made us smile because they are both very funny and very friendly.The manatees, having a similar anatomy with elephants, would automatically flip around and swim on their back when you touched their tummies urging you to grab them and hug them.
However, it is very said to recognize them individually due to the propeller marks of boats. These endangered species get hurt and sometimes lose their lives by the frequent propeller injuries. To prevent furthermore injuries of these sweet creatures, Wildlife Services of Florida sets marked areas in Crystal Water where no man or boat can enter.
The Sea Cow may not be as productive as to give us milk as the normal cow, but they sure provided us with the best laughs and warm feelings.
